Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – Symptoms and Treatment

Introduction:

People suffer from several respiratory diseases, and Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of them. It takes place when the acid present in the stomach starts to flow back into the tube, which connects the mouth and stomach. This tube is called Esophagus that gets affected by acid reflux.

People experience this acid reflux from time to time, which could be twice a week or at least once a week.

The treatment of GERD is determined by the severity or on the patient’s medical history. People can control the GERD by administering or changing the sedentary life style or also over the medication. But in some cases, surgery or counter drug is strongly needed to get over the disease.

Symptoms of GERD:

It is simple to detect the symptom of GERD in a patient because one cannot hide the expression of acid reflux in their body.

Some of the GERD symptoms are:

v  Heart Burn.

v  Chest Pain

v  Difficulty in swallowing

v  Vomiting tendency.

v  Severe cough

v  Laryngitis

v  Disrupted sleep

v  Asthma.

Causes of GERD:

Frequent acid reflux could be a significant cause of GERD. There is a whole procedure that determines the situation when the patient develops Gastroesophageal reflux disease.

While swallowing the food, a muscle circling the lower bottom of the Esophagus relaxes and allows the food and liquids to flow smoothly into the stomach, which later closes again. But, abnormality or weakness in the process pushes back the acid up into the Esophagus that could interrupt the entire lining causing into the inflammation.

Risk Factors for GERD:

Some health conditions or lifestyle behaviour are the reason that raises the risk of GERD.

Those includes:

  • v  Pregnancy
  • v  Obesity
  • v  Hiatal Hernia
  • v  Connective Tissue Disorder
  • v  Eating large meals.
  • v  Excessive smoking
  • v  Keeping the body in a relaxed position immediately after taking the meals.
  • v  Hard drink consumption, including Coffee.
  • v  Excessive use of painkillers.

Treatment for the GERD:

In lighter cases, people hardly approach doctors to seek treatment. But once the situation goes out of control, seeking a doctor help proved to be a great option.

At first, hardly any doctor prescribes hard medicines. Instead, they would suggest making changes in daily lifestyle or eating habits. They may also recommend for some counter medications like;

v  Antacids.

v  H2 receptor blockers

v  Proton pump inhibitors. (PPIs)

Counter medicines help a lot in improvising the condition of GERD. But the patient should make sure that the medication which they are opting for should be prescribed by the authorized doctors that could easily be available in any Brick and Mortar pharmacies or online pharmacies in India.

In rare cases, doctors suggest going for surgical treatment if the patient’s condition is worse or is suffering from some other ailments that could also be the prime factor of concern.

But before going to any conclusion, doctors always make sure that they go through different medical tests to know the severity of the GERD condition and also try to find out the patient’s background history so that the continuation of the treatment becomes trouble-free.

Home Remedies for GERD:

People nowadays often decide to live a healthy life and hence concentrates more on their health by holding the hand of nature. Allopathy medicines could indeed provide you instant relief, but one cannot ignore the fact that it also comes with side effects which could be malicious to your health in longer-term. Ayurveda medicines in the present era are available in online shops too so that the customers do not have to go from shop to shop in search of it.  People have a good experience of adopting herbal medicine that has provided them with a better result, but, on the flip side, it is also true that few have complained of side effects after the intake of herbal remedies. Hence this needs more research in the betterment of human society. However, herbal or Ayurvedic remedies cannot be taken parallelly with the Allopathy medicines as it could put impediments in the medication.

Conclusion:

Every ailment in the human body is a result of genetically modified food. People are so much involved with the development and money-making concept that they hardly bother for anyone’s health hence use of chemical in the production has increased incredibly. GERD is also a result of such acts. Hence physical exercise and returning to organic world is left with the only option to keep oneself fit and healthy.
